Better Cloth Enchanting
v1.0
Download: Steam | Nexus
Check out my other mods for Oblivion and Skyrim here.

Better Cloth Enchanting is a super-simple mod to make going unarmored a little more appealing: by boosting the power of player-made enchantments on clothes and jewelry by 50%!

So how does it work?

Exactly what I said. Any armor enchantment that has a magnitude will be 50% stronger when added to clothing or jewelry. This will work on any enchantment, even ones added by mods. It will work on mod-added clothes, too, as long as the clothes are properly tagged in the CK (This means they have the "ArmorJewelry" or "ArmorClothing" keywords).

Uh... That's all?

Yeah, that's all! I thought about adding different boosts to different material types, like in Morrowind (in Morrowind, the max strength of an enchantment depended on the item you put it on). I may still do that. For instance, give a boost to silver weapons and daedric armor and such.

Then again, I may not. In either case, the source code is packaged in the .bsa, so if you want to give it a shot, go wild.

So how do I install it?

If you're on Steam, subscribe. If you're on Nexus, unzip the most recent file directly into your Data folder.

To uninstall... Well, best not uninstall. I don't know if it'll do bad things to your game. Skyrim is weird like that. If you do, just uncheck Better Cloth Enchanting in your mod order and pray to the deity of your choice.

Hey, I thought you retired from modding!

First, thanks for asking. It's cool to know you care!

Second, well, yeah. I did. But I wanted this feature, and I couldn't find any other mods that added it. Besides, this is a little sneeze of a mod.

Anything else I should know?

As always, my mods are a resource (of questionable value, but still, a resource). Feel free to take it apart and learn from it, incorporate these techniques into your own modding, whatever you want. Go wild. Don't need to ask me first, don't need to credit me.

Unless you're just re-uploading this mod without making any changes. Then credit is very much appreciated.

Just a quick question, say I have another mod that affects enchanting, (example: I use the mod Enchanting ExtraEffect http://www.skyrim.ne....com/mods/32090 ) which allows you to put up to 5 enchantments on one piece of armor. My question is would that mod conflict with this one??

Nope, this shouldn't conflict with anything.

[EDIT]
And more specifically, this shouldn't conflict with the mod you're mentioning. My mod doesn't change any of the vanilla Skyrim records, just adds new ones.

This is great, except having full armor and jewelry enchantments is really enough in the base game, so is a boost to jewelry enchantments really necessary?

Not at all. I'd say this is a totally frivolous and unnecessary mod.

But if you're like me, maybe you want it in just because. Or maybe you're using another mod that re-balances enchanting, and you'd like to give jewelry/clothing a little advantage. Or you're using a difficulty-enhancing mod and want to have some reason to go unarmored.

Besides, if we only got necessary mods to Skyrim, we'd be down 99% of the mods that are out there.

Well I think a boost to clothing enchanting IS necessary, it's just the jewelry that I think should be left be.

Oh, gotcha.

If I ever do expand this mod to include other crafting materials, maybe I'll make the jewelry bonus togglable. In the meantime, I could give you instructions on how to remove that part of the mod? It's fairly straight-forward.

Most players who are willing to take that effort are probably more than capable of doing that on their own.
I don't think your target audience is the kind who's ever been motivated to open up the CK.

Doesn't hurt to offer.

Okiedoke!

Open up the Creation Kit.
Click the icon that looks like a folder on the top left (Data icon). Find "Better Cloth Enchanting.esp" in the list, highlight it, and click the Set as Active File button. Then hit OK.
The CK will spend some time loading. If it gives you an error message, hit "Yes to All." It should continue loading without problem.
In the Object window, go to Actors -> Perks. (Actors should be at the very top of the list.)
In the Perks list, you'll find an perk called opajMaterialsEnchant. Double-click to open it.
In the window that opens, there will be a section titled Perk Entries. Double-click the only item in that list.
That will open the Perk Entry window. Under conditions, open up the Item tab. Highlight 'Keyword: ArmorJewelry." Hit the delete key on your keyboard, then click OK on all the windows to get out of there.
Save, and you're done! Jewelry will no longer get a bonus to enchanting.

EDIT: Will endorse it when Nexus lets me.
