BOSS

A plugin load order optimiser for TES III: Morrowind, TES IV: Oblivion, Nehrim - At Fate's Edge, TES V: Skyrim, Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas.

Threads:

Introduction

BOSS is designed to assist mod users in avoiding detrimental conflicts, by setting the correct load order for the plugins they have installed.

BOSS also provides thousands of plugin-specific messages, including usage notes, Bash Tag suggestions, requirements, incompatibilities, bug warnings and installation mistake notifications. It supports the sorting of plugins ghosted by the Wrye *ash (Wrye Bash, Wrye Flash, Wrye Flash NV, Wrye Smash) utilities, is highly customisable, has been translated into multiple languages, and is simple to use.

Although BOSS recognises tens of thousands of plugins, it is not a complete solution to load ordering issues, as there are many more mods available. To properly place unrecognised plugins, a good working knowledge of mod load ordering is still necessary, for which some research and documentation reading will go a long way. See the Introduction To Load Orders section of BOSS's readme for an overview.

While BOSS technically supports TES III: Morrowind, no mod plugins are recognised and no further support is planned. Morrowind users looking for an automated load order manager should consider using mlox instead.

BOSS also has an API that gives programmers access to almost all of BOSS's functionality, plus more general load order management functionality that greatly simplifies working with load orders across the supported games. See the BOSS API Readme for more information on that.

Downloads

BOSS can be downloaded from its Google Code page.

Contributions & Help

General discussion, and the submission of questions, suggestions and unrecognised or unclean mods, takes place in BOSS's official threads for Oblivion, Nehrim, Skyrim, Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas.

User contribution of additions and corrections to the masterlist are vital to the upkeep of BOSS. Let us know what you know.

Lists of unrecognized mods are welcome but the only way we can include them in the database in a timely way is if we get:

  • The ESP/ESM file name(s).
  • A link to where the description, download or readme can be found to read or download.
  • A brief description of each mod will also help. Feel free to make load order suggestions.
Lists of unclean mods are also very welcome, but for the report to be most useful we require:

  • The ESP/ESM file name(s).
  • The number of records removed (the ITM count) as shown by TES4Edit/FO3Edit/FNVEdit/TES5Edit (not the number of records processed).
  • The number of records undeleted (the UDR count) as shown by TES4Edit/FO3Edit/FNVEdit/TES5Edit (not the number of records processed).
  • The CRC(s) of the unlcean ESP/ESM file name(s). Make sure that the CRCs are of the uncleaned files, not the files after cleaning. The CRC(s) may be calculated using BOSS, Wrye *ash or 7-zip, with other sources being unverified as correct. In the case of 7-zip, the "CRC checksum for data" is the one required.

License

BOSS is distributed under the GNU General Public License v3.0, aside from the documentation, which is distributed under the GNU Free Documentation License v1.3. For the full text of both licenses, see the included "Licenses.txt" file.

While the GPL license allows anyone to make derivative works of BOSS, the BOSS Development Team encourages those thinking of doing so to first discuss their reasoning for such an endevour with the Team. It may be that what the derivative work would do differently from BOSS itself is already planned for a future version of BOSS or would be happily integrated into BOSS by the Team, thus avoiding any extra effort by others.

The BOSS Team also appeals to the community to avoid the distribution and development of alternative masterlists, as this would only hamper the community effort to create one universally-optimised load order for all plugins available for download. Any issues with a masterlist are best brought to the attention of the BOSS Team so that we may remedy them ourselves.

See the ReadMe in the download for more information.

As the thread description states, continued updates for New Vegas are dependent on community members volunteering to join the BOSS Development Team and keep the masterlist updated. Quoting my post from the end of the last thread:

There have been no updates to the New Vegas masterlist since the 14th of November.

I have tried to ask around the team, but Valda (who was responsible for almost all the updates previously) is having RL issues so doesn't have the time, and others are either too busy already or are out of contact. I have tried to remind people that anyone can join the team to keep the masterlists updated, providing that they know what they're doing with load orders, but I have had no volunteers for New Vegas.

Unless someone volunteers, then the New Vegas masterlist will most likely not be updated in the foreseeable future.

If you can find your way around FNVEdit, know the rules of load ordering and have experience setting load orders manually, you're probably what's needed. Those interested can PM me or any of the other Team administrators (as listed in the readme), though only Arthmoor and I are active ATM, so PacificMorrowind and Random007 are unlikely to respond.

Wish I could help, but afraid I'm spread too thin already, might get nothing done if I spread any thinner.
Anyway, for when someone does volunteer, or if I decide to take it up, here's one unrecognized mod that needs to be added on next update.

"ACES - Casino Data Extension.esm" (from http://newvegasnexus...le.php?id=44902) should always be loaded at the very top, right after FalloutNV.esm and DeadMoney.esm.
Wouldn't ask, but BOSS tends to place unrecognized mods at the bottom, which can cause problems with that file.

Just in case someone picks up the slack on this (I'd do it, but I too have too much going on as it is...)

- NVEC MikotoBeauty Patch - NO DLC.esp CRC = 87E5630D
- New Vegas Error Corrections BugFixes - NO DLC.esp CRC = FD76F012...both from NVEC Error Corrections, as is the one below and I've been putting them with the BOSS-recognized NVEC .esp's
- New Vegas Error Corrections BugFixes - NO DLC.esm CRC = 14A2EC72...bottom of my .esm list

- WastelandFreelancer.esp...http://www.newvegasn...le.php?id=43922 CRC = 9C8F627B
- geonoxT3Armors.esp...from Riot Armor Type 3 CRC = DB03733E
- [ARMOR]-NCR_Freelancer_gear.esp...from NCR Freelancer Armor for Type 3 and Breeze CRC = 998E11E6 (currently under review and not readily available from the Nexus...dunno why, as I was able to get my copy without a problem a week or so ago)
...all of these I put with the BOSS_recognized clothing .esp's

- oHUD.esm...from One HUD CRC = 279B63E9...second from the bottom of my .esm list

NVEC Performance Of The Gods exhibits a similar load order issue, once sorted that my Clean-Away does. This is kind of the be expected, since it uses the similar technique of "Disabling" the references rather than deleting them.

It should be loaded semi-late in the load order, after any mods likely to edit a location. That way any mod that has a record in that category marked as deleted is likely to cause no compatibility problems.

I've got a few entries in my userlist I'd be willing to contribute. Most are just simple instances where a mod author has renamed the ESP or come out with a new version, for example oHUD.esm pretty much is sorted at the same location as iHUD.esm.

It should only do that if you have Nehrim.esm in your Data folder. If there's a legitimate reason why this would be the case (ie. a mod for New Vegas of the same name), then I will need to adjust the detection.

Same problem here, with a clean install of Fallout New Vegas. No Nehrim of course.

BOSS v1.9.1 Released!

Get it from the usual places. I shall add the BOSS Log message and auto-updaters will find it shortly. Changelog:

  • Fixed: Mods in the last group of a masterlist being unrecognised when one or more user rules were enabled.
  • Fixed: Masterlist-format files saved by BOSS that contain messages cannot be loaded successfully by BOSS. This bug was never exposed.
  • Fixed: Every second link in a message displayed in the BOSS Log not being displayed as a hyperlink when using the HTML BOSS Log.
  • Fixed: MF1 legacy conditionals always being evaluated for Oblivion, even when BOSS was run for other games.
  • Fixed: Masterlist parsing errors were not correctly reported in the BOSS Log.
  • Fixed: BOSS Updater version checking not returning correct result with some versions.
  • Changed: Masterlist conditional evaluation now occurs separately from masterlist parsing.
  • Changed: BOSS Log's Unrecognised Plugins section is now only displayed if there are any unrecognised plugins present.
  • Changed: Some tidying up of the BOSS Log text and formatting.
  • Changed: Code type safety work. BOSS can now be built to 32 and 64 bit binaries, although 64 bit binaries will not be distributed.
  • Changed: Copyright license is now GNU General Public License v3.0 for everything but the documentation, and GNU Free Documentation License v1.3 for the documentation.
  • Changed: Updated version of libcurl used from 7.22.0 to 7.23.1, and updated version of Boost libraries used from 1.47.0 to 1.48.0.
  • Changed: Expanded/Collapsed indicators added for masterlist groups in the GUI's User Rules Editor.
  • Changed: GUI's User Rules Editor will now auto-scroll the rule list so that the currently selected rule is visible whenever the rule list is altered.

  • A Requiem for the Capital Wastland - http://www.newvegasn...le.php?id=41480 - this mod adds Fallout 3 to Fallout New Vegas. Aside from the world space, it also alters some of Fallout 3's weapons and perks. There are several reccomended load lists to use. Also there are a bunch of ESPS I'm not including here.

These files are from the original fallout but are required as part of the requiem mod, again the reccomended load order is listed there.
  • NVEC BF Improved Sound FX Patch.esp

- http://www.newvegasn...le.php?id=35293 - This should go after the name improved sound file.

ESM Fixer.esp

- This comes with RFCW mod but really is its own deal, this should go as far last in the load order as can be possible. I don't know if this should be before or after the bashed path however.

I had this issue too.. reinstalling BOSS fixed and changing the BOSS log format to "plain text" seems to have fixed it. I also launch BOSS through Wrye Flash if that helps at all.. though I was getting the Nehrim error launching BOSS directly as well.

edit: actually nevermind, still having the same issue after running BOSS. Also, I can't seem to get the masterlist.txt to update

This is very strange...

Can you please post the full paths to your Fallout NV, Nehrim and BOSS folders? Right-click the address bar in Windows Explorer and select "Copy address as text". The folders I'm interested in are those containing a BOSS.exe, Nehrim.esm or FalloutNV.esm.

Neg. I had to delete all mention of Nehrim from the ini and BOSS logs and force a master update. Works now, I think...

D:\Games\Steam\steamapps\common\fallout new vegas\BOSS /*BOSS here*/
D:\Games\Steam\steamapps\common\fallout new vegas\Data /*FalloutNV.esm here*/
D:\Games\Steam\steamapps\common\skyrim\Data /*Skyrim data files here*/

Again, to clarify, I do not have Nehrim installed. I however have Skyrim...

Wait, what do you mean mention of Nehrim in the ini? If you're meaning the BOSS.ini, then that can only have Nehrim mentioned for sGame, which should be "auto" by default.

If you set sGame to "Nehrim", that will override BOSS's autodetection. If it's being set to "Nehrim" by default instead of "auto", then something's wrong. Easiest way to check is to delete your BOSS.ini and run BOSS to generate a new one, then see what that says.

Basically, I grabbed 1.9.1 as it was still very fresh on the Nexus page, being a virgin FalloutNV install I went ahead and Update Masterlist Only, Autodetect on the BOSS GUI, intending to mod the game, obviously.

the BOSS log that it gave me said that even FalloutNV was unrecognized.

So since it was a fresh reinstall of the game (with the DLC's) I went ahead and reverified, and checked the INI whilst Steam was doing its thing as well as the masterlist.

Both referenced Nehrim, which prompted my first post here.

After reverifying, I tried again (deleted masterlist and ini) directly via BOSS itself, not going through the GUI.

It did it again. At this point, my second post was made.

Then I redownloaded BOSS off the same nexus page I used (newvegasnexus) and ran BOSS directly. Finally gave me the correct masterlist and sorted my mods. Which reminds me, gotta bashpatch some of these mods...

EDIT: Confirming it works now. Redownloaded it off newvegasnexus and it works flawlessly. I'm guessing when I grabbed it when it was still fresh, updating the masterlist from the Google repo kept giving me the Nehrim masterlist by mistake for some screwed-up-in-the-noggin' reason.

OK, no idea why that was happening then. At least it's working now. v2.0 will use a different update system which may reduce the chance of things like this happening.

I redownloaded it as well and am not having the Nehrim issue anymore either.. fyi.

Also, is 3666 the lastest masterlist version - I thought some of these would have already been on the list?

Gotcha.. I just assumed that since a new version of BOSS was released and the masterlist is dated 1/2/12 that someone was updating it.
