BOSS

A "one-click" program for users that quickly optimises and avoids detrimental conflicts in their TES IV: Oblivion, Nehrim - At Fate's Edge, TES V: Skyrim, Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas mod load orders.

Threads:

Features

  • Correctly positions over 2,900 Fallout 3 mods and counting.
  • Provides a large number of usage notes for many mods, including requirements, incompatibilities, updates and bug warnings.
  • Displays the version number of mods when it is available.
  • Provides Bash Tag suggestions that are automatically applied by Wrye Flash.
  • Sorts mod files ghosted by Wrye Flash.
  • Allows easy user customisation of mod positions and the messages provided.
  • Includes both CLI and GUI clients, offering full functionality and ease-of-use for all users.
  • Includes a semi-automatic updater to ensure that you always have the latest version installed.
  • Is under constant development and improvement by a team of modders and Fallout 3 experts.

BOSS (Better Oblivion Sorting Software) will re-order your mods to their correct positions, putting any mods it doesn't recognise after them, in the same order as they were before BOSS was run.

BOSS is designed to assist in the usage of mods, helping mod users avoid serious conflicts. It is not a complete solution to load ordering issues, as there are far more mods out there than BOSS knows about. To properly place mods BOSS doesn't know about, a good working knowledge of mod load ordering for Fallout 3 is still necessary, for which some research and documentation reading will go a long way.

Downloads

BOSS can be downloaded from TES Nexus, Skyrim Nexus, Fallout 3 Nexus and Fallout New Vegas Nexus. All four sites have the same files.

Installation & Basic Usage

Note that BOSS does not support Windows 2000 or earlier.

1. If you have Wrye Flash, make sure the "Lock Times" function is deactivated.

2. If upgrading from an earlier version of BOSS, delete all BOSS files and folders in your game's Data folder (including the BOSS folder, BOSS.exe, masterlist.txt, modlist.txt, modlist.old, BOSSlog.txt and any of BOSS's .bat files). If you have an edited masterlist, make sure to keep a backup so that your edits are not lost. It is recommended that you instead use the userlist functionality to apply changes to the masterlist.

3. Extract the BOSS archive you downloaded to your game's installation directory (ie. the one containing the Data folder and Fallout3.exe, so "Fallout 3"), so that there is now a BOSS folder alongside the Data folder and Fallout3.exe.

4. In the BOSS folder, run the "BOSS.exe". This will download the latest masterlist from the Internet and then sort your mods.

5. Thereafter when running BOSS, you may run it directly from the BOSS.exe to simply update your masterlist then sort your mods, or you can use the GUI to choose how BOSS runs.

Once BOSS has finished running, the output will be displayed automatically. Read any notes, errors if applicable, and make any relevant changes that are suggested by them. Wrye Flash will automatically import and apply Bash Tag suggestions from BOSS. Some Bash Tag suggestions can come with conditions and notes that require human intervention though, so read the suggestions makes thoroughly and adjust tags by hand in Wrye Flash if necessary.

You will need to reorder "unknown" mods by hand using FOMM or Wrye Flash.

Contributions & Help

General discussion, and the submission of questions, suggestions and unrecognised or unclean mods, takes place in BOSS's official threads for Oblivion, Nehrim, Skyrim, Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas.

User contribution of additions and corrections to the masterlist are vital to the upkeep of BOSS. Let us know what you know.

Lists of unrecognized mods are welcome but the only way we can include them in the database in a timely way is if we get:

  • The ESP/ESM file name(s).
  • A link to where the description, download or readme can be found to read or download.
  • A brief description of each mod will also help. Feel free to make load order suggestions.
Lists of unclean mods are also very welcome, but for the report to be most useful we require:

  • The ESP/ESM file name(s).
  • The number of records removed (the ITM count) as shown by FO3Edit (not the number of records processed).
  • The number of records undeleted (the UDR count) as shown by FO3Edit (not the number of records processed).
  • The CRC(s) of the unlcean ESP/ESM file name(s). Make sure that the CRCs are of the uncleaned files, not the files after cleaning. The CRC(s) may be calculated using BOSS, Wrye Flash or 7-zip, with other sources being unverified as correct. In the case of 7-zip, the "CRC checksum for data" is the one required.

Updates

You can check for updates to BOSS then download and install any available using the GUI's "Check For Updates" functionality. Masterlist updates are by default automatically downloaded by BOSS when it runs.

BOSS program updates are also published at the TES Nexus, Skyrim Nexus, Fallout 3 Nexus and New Vegas Nexus BOSS pages. For those not using the masterlist updater, the latest masterlist is always on the Google Code repository.

Always make sure to use the latest version of BOSS and the latest masterlist.

License

Better Oblivion Sorting Software is distributed under the GNU General Public License v3.0, aside from the documentation, which is distributed under the GNU Free Documentation License v1.3. The documents covered by the latter license are "BOSS ReadMe.html", "BOSS User Rules ReadMe.html", "BOSS API ReadMe.html" and "BOSS Masterlist Syntax.html".

For the full text of both licenses, see the included "Licenses.txt" file.

While the GPL license allows anyone to make derivative works of BOSS, the BOSS Development Team encourages those thinking of doing so to first discuss their reasoning for such an endevour with the Team. It may be that what the derivative work would do differently from BOSS itself is already planned for a future version of BOSS or would be happily integrated into BOSS by the Team, thus avoiding any extra effort by others.

The BOSS Team also appeals to the community to avoid the distribution and development of alternative masterlists, as this would only hamper the community effort to create one universally-optimised load order for all plugins available for download. Any issues with a masterlist are best brought to the attention of the BOSS Team so that we may remedy them ourselves.

See the ReadMe in the download for more information.

From previous thread...

Reorder these by hand using your favourite mod ordering utility.
mesme.esm
BnB special armors.esm
AgeBasedBodys.esm
Level50BrokenSteel.esp
mesme.esp
BnB special armors.esp
BC Cloths.esp

I'm gonna need links for these please :)

Torrello, you may remember that I was a bit astonished about the suggested tags for ART. I've tried a plethora of combinations and found that a simple

NoMerge

shows the best result with

Arwen_GOTY_Realism_Core.esp

Arwen_GOTY_Hard-Core.esp

-------------------------------------------------------------

But

Arwen_GOTY_Med-Tec.esp

works best in my LO when I add next to the already integrated Relev:

Names, Stats

Otherwise, a quest-mod that changed the Punga fruits had priority. And, imo, ART should topple that.

-------------------------------------------------------------

There are warnings from Arwen about bashing her plugins. I know from personal experience that some simple cannot be processed by bash. But if you're sure these work I'll gladly add them (at work tonight, I'll try to do it tomorrow, if now tues definitely)

Hm, the Realism and Hardcore modules are extensively tagged in the masterlist - at first, I ignored those tags but lately, I've tried some gameplay with them and everything seemed to work and the conflict list in FO3edit was much shorter (which, of course, isn't always a sign for a correctly working mod, sometimes quite to the contrary).

Even though some ART-values were not correct without bashing, I'll test them a last time with my initial settings, which means: pretty much no bashing at all. Lets see if Arwen isn't correct ..

Well, I'd very much prefer it if someone else tested this, but ..

If I don't add the tag "Names" to

Arwen_Med-Tec.esp

then Morphine is still called Med-X, the uncooked Brahmin Steak misses the qualifier "Raw" and so on.

So, in my LO, the Names-tag (ha) is necessary.

But you're perfectly right: any change to the suggested bash tags in the masterlist should be handled very carefully and, imo, confirmed by at least a second party. So, lets not do it, unless someone else has the same result.

If you've added tags and it fixes issues in-game then that's good enough for me. Think I've got all the tags you suggested above and from previous thread.
Also, since BOSS v1.9 was released I've not been doing the non-change FO:NV commit, so confirmation that you're all getting the latest masterlist when BOSS updates would be all cool and groovy baby!

I get the latest list, no problem.

There are still some mostly minor inconsistencies when I add ART with the suggested tags + mine but I want to test more first before I suggest more changes.

One other thing (yeah, I know ..): I don't know if you've followed my encumbrance-problem laid out in in the Fallout Remastered thread; it was a nuisance but easily solved by adding the Gifts4Kids.esp earlier than ART.

Can you think of any reason why changing the load order of those two mods in the masterlist could cause a problem? If not, may I suggest to switch the mods' places? Maybe this was a problem that won't happen to anyone else but if there is no reason NOT to change the load order, we might prevent a problem for someone else by doing so ..

New patches were added to the latest Fallout Remastered (the mentioned requirements are transfers from the readmes):

Fallout Remastered - Arwen Realism.esp

Fallout Remastered - Atmospheric Pack:

Fallout Remastered - Wasteland Music Injector.esp

  • Requires Realistic Interior Lighting
  • Requires Wasteland Music Injector

Fallout Remastered - DC Street Package:

Fallout Remastered - DCStreet + Dynamic Weather.esp

  • Requires DC Street - BS.esp
  • Requires Xepha's Dynamic Weather

Fallout Remastered - EVE Package:

The first file is a renamed version of "Fallout Remastered - EVE (PI Merge).esp", so it's either ..or

Fallout Remastered - EVE (Paradox Ignition Merge).esp

  • Requires Paradox Ignition Merged version of Energy Visuals Enhanced
Fallout Remastered - FOOK2 + EVE (PI Merge).esp
  • Requires Paradox Ignition Merged version of Energy Visuals Enhanced
  • Requires FOOK2 1.2 Open Beta
Fallout Remastered - FWE + EVE (PI Merge).esp
  • Requires Paradox Ignition Merged version of Energy Visuals Enhanced
  • Requires Fallout Wanderer's Edition 6.03 and all DLC plugins
Fallout Remastered - MMM + EVE (PI Merge).esp
  • Requires RC6.1 OR RC6.2 version of Mart's Mutant Mod
  • Requires Paradox Ignition Merged version of Energy Visuals Enhanced

Fallout Remastered - MMM Package:

Fallout Remastered - FOOK2 + MMM.esp

  • Requires all DLC plugins for the RC 6.1 or RC 6.2 version of Mart's Mutants Mod
  • Requires FOOK2 1.2 Open Beta
  • Does not require a FOIP, provides complete compatibility between these two files
Fallout Remastered - FWE + MMM.esp
  • Requires all DLC plugins for the 6.03 version of Fallout Wanderer's Edition
  • Requires all DLC plugins for the RC 6.1 or RC 6.2 version of Mart's Mutants Mod
  • Does not require a FOIP, provides complete compatibility between these two files
Fallout Remastered - MMM + Scavenger.esp
  • Requires RC6.1 OR RC6.2 version of Mart's Mutant Mod
  • Requires Scavenger World 0.04

Some older files have been implemented in newer ones that deal with the interaction of mods, so we might have several "either .. or"-situations among old and new files as well as among the new ones.

But BOSS can't replace a readme, so ..

I think that BC Cloths and Aged Based Bodies are all part of Bouncing Natural Breasts. Which is an awesome mod and I find myself walking backward watching my companion as much as possible.

From a error report someone showed me:

Xepha's Dynamic Weather - Night Eye Edition.esp
! "this plugin conflicts with 'xepha's dynamic weather - night eye edition.esp'

Might want to look at that. Mods shouldn't conflict with themselves ;)

----

On the Fallout Remastered front:

The MMM+Scavenger's World patch is documented wrong and made a bit wrong, too. It really requires the 0.08 FWE version of that file. I may fix that up, or I will more likely rename it to MMM + FWE + Scavenger's World

----

And to back up thomnaal's report, Gifts4Kids does cause problems when used with ART and Remastered. Changing the load order in the method he describes not only solves the problem, but causes absolutely no strange behaviors. So I would suggest changing the location of G4K in the BOSS library, as it causes no problem being moved.

I actually did this a couple weeks ago. When I did some rearrangeing I moved these files around, so it was my fault. I have now move ALL Arwen's files after the later misc section. Hope this fixed the issue.

Got a new one for you:

Dust-awayTM
Dust-away.esp
Dust-away - DLC Support.esp

Just made them today. Load before:
Weather Mods
Lighting Mods
Location based music mods
Cell-fixing mods (like Remastered or Error Corrections)

Load after:
Doesn't really matter, but the earlier it loads the more accidental changes to Dust clouds are kept.

Added these, quite early too, just after other dust removal mods. Just to note, the DLC support plugin lists the masters with Anchorage.esm before Fallout.esm. Doesn't really matter but you might want to rectify

Ah, yes. Otherwise BASH might chew on it wrong.

Good catch. I also noticed a dirty record in there. The newest version will be uploaded shortly which is fully cleaned and BASH compliant.

----

Also, dust removers?
I only found one on the Nexus other than mine, and it didn't seem too worked-on.
I'm sure people do this for themselves very often since it's pretty simple to do in a couple of different ways, but seriously I didn't consider that there were other options out there.

I MUST MAKE IT THE BEST MOD EVAR! ;)

And some more for you:

FROM THE MAKERS OF DUST-AWAY!

Dust-Away.esp
Dust-Away - DLC Support.esp
Paper-Shredder.esp
Paper-Shredder - DLC Support.esp
Rock-Out.esp
Rock-Out - DLC Support.esp
Clean-Deluxe GOTY.esp

In that order, wherever they are.... actually the order doesn't matter but Clean-Deluxe is every one of those put into one file.

I have also uploaded a new version of Remastered (0.91) which would have a different checksum... if it matters.

The whole checksums (presumably for cleaning purposes) thing hasn't taken off in Fallout. I wasn't about to start either as I'm only playing Skyrim, but am happy to keep FO3 masterlist updated.

Load order error encountered for Clean-Away GOTY edition, presumably for Dust-Away, Paper-Shredder, and Rock-Out as well.

Loading it very early in your load order can cause other mods, which mark the same objects affected as DELETED, can cause your game to crash on startup. It's not a problem with Clean-Away specifically, but with the methods in which other mods remove objects when they're not wanted, and the file is not later cleaned up sufficiently well.

I have had several reports of this behavior, and in every case moving Clean-Away et al down further in the load order into the Weather mod area fixed the problem up nicely. Also, it's more what I wanted the mod to be. The objects removed by this group of mods I have just released are some of the most commonly overused objects by Bethesda, and the easiest to misclick on when creating a mod in the GECK.

I realize there are other dust-removal mods out there, but upon looking for them and examining the contents of some of them, I have found that the techniques behind Clean-Away are sufficiently different that treating them as the same kind of animal is not properly correct, as far as load order is concerned.

So the Author's suggested load order is that it should be considered equivallent to a Weather or Lighting mod and loaded late, not early. Loading it above them would be sufficient, and possibly marked as a new type of category - "Disabler" rather than "Remover"

Moved all of them to the weather/light/water section

-- Unrecognized Plugins

Reorder these by hand using your favourite mod ordering utility.

RangerHelmet.esp - Makes Ranger Battle Helmet use its proper vanilla texture from the .bsa instead of regular combat helmet texture.

BOSS v1.9.1 Released!

Get it from the usual places. I shall add the BOSS Log message and auto-updaters will find it shortly. Changelog:

  • Fixed: Mods in the last group of a masterlist being unrecognised when one or more user rules were enabled.
  • Fixed: Masterlist-format files saved by BOSS that contain messages cannot be loaded successfully by BOSS. This bug was never exposed.
  • Fixed: Every second link in a message displayed in the BOSS Log not being displayed as a hyperlink when using the HTML BOSS Log.
  • Fixed: MF1 legacy conditionals always being evaluated for Oblivion, even when BOSS was run for other games.
  • Fixed: Masterlist parsing errors were not correctly reported in the BOSS Log.
  • Fixed: BOSS Updater version checking not returning correct result with some versions.
  • Changed: Masterlist conditional evaluation now occurs separately from masterlist parsing.
  • Changed: BOSS Log's Unrecognised Plugins section is now only displayed if there are any unrecognised plugins present.
  • Changed: Some tidying up of the BOSS Log text and formatting.
  • Changed: Code type safety work. BOSS can now be built to 32 and 64 bit binaries, although 64 bit binaries will not be distributed.
  • Changed: Copyright license is now GNU General Public License v3.0 for everything but the documentation, and GNU Free Documentation License v1.3 for the documentation.
  • Changed: Updated version of libcurl used from 7.22.0 to 7.23.1, and updated version of Boost libraries used from 1.47.0 to 1.48.0.
  • Changed: Expanded/Collapsed indicators added for masterlist groups in the GUI's User Rules Editor.
  • Changed: GUI's User Rules Editor will now auto-scroll the rule list so that the currently selected rule is visible whenever the rule list is altered.

The auto-update thing repetitively wants me to download the latest update. It's like its trying to run BOSS instead of the installer when it quits, unlike what it says in the update message.

Auto update wouldn't work for me, but then neither did the installer nor manual install. This was due to Wrye Smash (bash for skyrim) still running the boss.exe after being closed. I rebooted and ran the installer version again without any problems. I recommend using the installer version, personally
