Here's my dxdiag and hijackthis log.
http://pastebin.com/3Q1Zp0Mv dxdiag
http://pastebin.com/Sv3Sy7rB hijackthis.
Help please? This isn't a gamebreaking thing or does it render the game unplayable, but it does take some of the fun factor out.

Same issue.
Doesn't seem gamebreaking at first.. til I ran into a doorway I couldn't pass and spent 2 hours tryna find out why.. gave up.. watched a let's play, he went through the same part, and turns out.. there's invisible spider webs there. Oh, and you can't see the magic OTHER people throw at you. Have fun dodging dragons.

i suggest downloading and installing the latest version of the directx runtimes.
also you might try completely uninstalling and then reinstalling your video card drivers...after a restart of course

"So I dont currently have my gaming PC and therefore I'm using my almost 3 year old laptop to play. It sports an AMD Turion x2 2.2 ghz processor and an ATI RAdeon 3850 512 mb graphics card. I can run the game smoothly at high settings and even tried it at ultra, however, my problem is with spell effects... They look nothing like they are supposed to. For example the flame spell, only shows the animation of my burning hands and the impact animation but pretty much the whole "flame jet" is missing.
Is this due to certain processes that my card just doesn't have? Or is there a setting i could forcefully unlock to get proper spell effects at the cost of performance. It really detracts quite a bit from the experience Still love the game and will mostly likely spend hundreds of hours even without the spell effects but would love to have them.
Any tech savy people on here have any insight into how the game handles spell animations and how it translates to graphics card processes? Much appreciated."

this sounds like a directx or driver issue;

Yup laptop graphics card. Running 32 bit Vista. Can't figure out what the problem could be. Have latest drivers from 13th of October 2011 (for my card at least) Not sure what else I could do. Try forcing the game into Direct x 9,0c? is that even possible?

both directX 10 and 11 use API's from the directX 9 releases to convert processes coded within directx 9 to directx 10 or 11
it can happen that if your dx9 is well out of date then you needed to update all your directX api's
saw it alot in the early days of Vista and it happened alot in early days of Windows 7 as well.
unless you try to do what is suggested then you wont "know" if it will work or not......

I did try both suggestions and they did not work. Downloaded the latest runtime and during install said I was up to date. Likewise with my drivers they are up to date. Did an uninstall and install.

http://steamcommunit...701896637651379 All that appears is a dust effect and someone being burned by it
Radeon HD3850, Catalyst 11.10 (same thing happens under 11.9)
Is there anywhere I can report this to Bethesda and/or ATI? I'd love a speedy fix.

you tried new user account in windows?
I was gonna try that next, heard it helped some people... I guess I would be already relieved to hear that the problems we are facing are not due to fact that our graphics cards are just incapable of processing the spell effects but are instead something that can be fixed.

I couldn't see the spiderwebs in the door. Fire spells sometime don't show most of the spell (it shows up ok on the enemy afflicted), Fury is completely invisible when cast. Lightning is ok tho.

Just tried a new user account in windows.. didn't fix the problem. However I paid more attention to what is actually happening on screen during the dragon's dragon fire and my flames spells. Like other users have said, lightning works fine, as does fireball... just not the flames spells, dragon flames, or frostbite jet flames, webs etc.. Looking closely it seems as if the animation is so light as to be transparent... making it look invisible. No idea how to fix that though with any settings... Its as if in between the hit and cast animation is just a long line of the invisible heatwave that you get looking at a hot pavement...
